1) Launch Affinity Photo.
2) Click File > Open.. and open the photos of Valentina Tereshkova and Pope Benedict XVI.
3) By default, you will be in the Photo Persona. Click on the Selection Brush Tool.
4) Set a sizeable width in the Context Toolbar and drag over the portion you want to extract and trace out a selection. If there are extra spills in the selection, click on the Subtract button and reduce them.

6) Reduce the opacity of the pasted layer (here I reduced to around 67%). Resize, rotate and align it to scale to Tereshkova's face; it is actually practical to align around the eyes.
7) Set the image opacity of Benedict XVI back to 100% and drag it below the original layer.
8) Next, pick the Selection Brush Tool and select the face of Valentina Tereshkova which is the portion targetted for deletion. If there are extra spills in areas of selection, click on the Subtract button and reduce them.
9) Now in order to avoid any blunt edges around the helmet in selection, we need to refine it. Click on the Refine.. button in the context toolbar and adjust the Smooth, Feather and Ramp fields. Set the adjustment brush to the desired size and paint over the selected edges. After that, press Apply.
10) Now in the Layers panel, make sure that the upper background layer (original photo of Valentina Tereshkova) is selected. Then press Delete to delete the refined selection.
11) Pope Benedict XVI's face pops up. Press ⌘ + D and undo the selection.
12) We have successfully swapped the face, but we have to correct the skin colour. Click on the Adjustments panel. Then select HSL.
13) Adjust the controls: Hue, Saturation, Luminosity.
14) After adjusting, here is the resulting output.

On White head shots can be tough if you have to work on location. In this case, logistically, I didn’t want to have to haul a 4 light setup, backdrop and v-flats to the shoot location. I took advantage of the (nearly) white walls at the location and concentrated on lighting the subject the way I wanted. I used 2 lights, a large 3×4 soft-box on the subject and a 3×1.5 strip box on the background to light it.
It is easiest to replace a background when the new background is similar in color and tone to the original. By adding the light the the background I was able to get close enough to make life easier during the retouching.

Smooth Skin In Affinity Photo

Once I had a rough selection, I created a mask and inverted it (because I had selected the background but I wanted to mask IN the subject instead). Once the subject was masked, all I had to do was create an empty pixel layer, move it below the subject and fill it with white.
Frequency Separation and Face Shape
Frequency separation is frequently (see what I did there) used to smooth skin blemishes, and remove pores, and other natural skin features. In this case, I used frequency separation to remove the bags under the subjects eyes and reduce the laugh lines around his eyes. I also used blended regions of the low frequency layer to smooth the shape of his face.
Shadow is the main queue our brains use to turn 2D images into 3D ideas. By lightening and darkening areas I can control shape. In this case, the lighting setup highlighted some undulations in the subjects cheeks. Blending the light and dark areas to a uniform and consistent pattern causes those undulations to disappear. The same applies to things like wrinkles in a neck when it is turned.
